Sigma Alpha Mu Colonizes Johnson & Wales

Full Story:

The Fraternity formally colonized a 23-man interest group at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island February 10, 2001. New England Province Regional Governor Adam Ritscher assisted by members from Brandeis, Northeastern University, and local alumni, officially affiliated the group in the traditional candidate ceremony.

The group decided over winter break that there was a need for a new fraternity focused on academic achievement, community service and life-long friendships. Johnson and Wales freshman, Steve Alexander, brother of David Alexander UMASS '97 spearheaded the effort to bring SAM to campus.

Johnson & Wales is a private school with campuses throughout the world and known for its excellence in the culinary arts. The main campus is located in Providence, RI with a student population of 9,600 students. The 12-year-old Greek system consists of seven member fraternities. Sigma Alpha Mu was founded in 1909 at the College of the City of New York as a Fraternity of Jewish men. There are currently 62 groups throughout North America with over 54,000 initiates since founding.
